Abstract
Aim: The hemodialysis water treatment system consists of pretreatment and reverse osmosis sections. While purified water is obtained from reverse osmosis, twice of this amount is discharged to the sewage system. It is crucial to determine the possible physical factors that need to be corrected to increase reverse osmosis efficiency. Our aim is to show the relationship between the amount of discharged water and the ambient temperature. Material and Methods: The water discarded from the reverse osmosis in the hemodialysis water treatment system between January 6 and October 26, 2023 was recorded daily by installing a water meter to the drain pipe. The night, day and 24-hour average temperatures of the Usak city center were obtained from meteorological data. For data analysis; mean ± standard deviation, ANOVA and Pearson Correlation Test was used, p< 0,05 was statistically significant. Results: A total of 9433 hemodialysis sessions were performed on 75 patients in 10 months. The total amount of water discharged from the system during the preparation of dialysate was 775 m3. The ambient temperature was 14,9±8,3°C (-6.5°C/30°C) for 24 hours, 21,8±9,8°C (-1°C/41°C) during the day and 8±7,3°C (-14°C/21°C) at night. There is a positive correlation between the night temperature and the amount of water discharged (r= 0,027, p>0,05). The amount of water discharged increased in the hot seasons compared to the cold seasons. Conclusion: This study has shown that during water purification for hemodialysis, excess water is discarded and that the efficiency of water purification system varies with temperature of the ambient.
