Özet
This paper explores the evolving role of storage in India’s transition, linking climate goals with the broader development agenda. A mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) framework is applied to evaluate deployment pathways for battery energy storage systems (BESS), pumped hydro storage (PHS), and thermal energy storage (TES) during 2025–2030. The model draws on historical data (2020–2024) and forward-looking projections from established agencies including the IEA, IRENA, CEA, NREL, and MNRE. It minimizes system cost subject to demand, emission, and firm power constraints, enabling a comparative techno-economic assessment across storage technologies. Metrics considered include capacity addition, capital expenditure (CAPEX), operational expenditure (OPEX), levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), and emission reduction potential. The results suggest that PHS continues to be cost-effective for long-duration applications, while the rapid decline in BESS costs makes it the most attractive option for enhancing grid flexibility under high renewable penetration. TES is found to have a niche role, particularly in concentrated solar power integration. The paper concludes with policy recommendations derived from international experience but tailored to India’s grid conditions and policy environment, offering practical guidance for accelerating storage adoption in support of the net-zero pathway.
