Determination of Primary School Students’ Usage of Story Elements in Free Story Writing Practices

Özet

The aim of this study is to examine the theme, main characters, time and place elements in the stories written by primary school students according to their class levels. For this purpose, the following questions were sought. Do theme, main character, time and place preferences in the stories written by primary school students differ according to their grade levels? The research was designed in qualitative model and case study design. The study group consists of 200 students selected from primary school students. The study group was determined by purposeful sampling technique. The data collection process of the research consisted of three stages: Creating storytelling worksheet, determination of the working group and explaining the application to the group, making the application. The data obtained from the research were analyzed through content analysis and descriptive analysis. Cross-table and chi-square tests were used to determine whether the elements preferred in the students’ stories were significant at each grade level. The results of the research show that elementary school students’ story, theme, main character, time and place elements used to write stories differ according to class level.
