Özet
This study examines how the newspaper Ulus, the mouthpiece of the single-party regime in Turkey, constructed representations of the ‘Turkic world’ drawing on cultural commonalities between 1935 and 1939, while the early Republic itself remained distant from political Pan-Turkism. By highlighting communities such as the Balkan Turks, Turks in Soviet Russia, and the people of Hatay and Sanjak, and by invoking the ancient Turks primarily as a civilisational reference, the newspaper framed language, history, and culture to support an internally focused construction of Turkish identity, rather than to establish extra-territorial ties. By situating Ulus within the cultural and political context of the period, this study reveals the role of the press in shaping the regime's nationalist agenda and a civilisation-oriented nation-building narrative within a non-irredentist framework.
