Özet

The concept of gatekeeping in communication research refers to the process of selecting and filtering news, defining individuals such as reporters and editors in mass media who determine what will be considered news and what will not. Gatekeeping operates within a multidimensional framework encompassing both individual and organizational factors. Individual factors such as journalists' preferences, opinions, and lifestyle can influence the gatekeeping process, while the economic and political structure of the institution they work for significantly impacts journalists' decision-making processes. The field where gatekeeping is most intensely felt is in sports journalism. The unique characteristics and dynamics of sports journalism (such as limited coverage of women's sports or a focus on football-related news) directly influence the gatekeeping process, alongside individual and organizational processes that play an effective role in gatekeeping. With the inclusion of social media networks, the gatekeeping process of sports journalists has become even more complex. Their gatekeeping roles in social media networks have weakened and transformed.
