Özet

This book chapter deals with the combustion of biofuels in internal combustion engines. In particular, it is aimed to present the issue of the combustion of the recently developed biofuels after discussing the technology of internal combustion engines and the biofuels production methods. The combustion of biofuels in internal combustion engines is discussed and the strokes and basic working principles of internal combustion engines are explained. Besides general and theoretical information, the examination of an internal combustion diesel engine operated with different biofuels has been studied as a case study. In this context, the different data extracted from the combustion tests are examined. An evaluation is carried out on experimental, thermodynamic, and environmental studies of the use of biofuels in an internal combustion diesel engine. The soot concentration of BDF100 (100% biodiesel) is inversely proportional with the engine load. However, the soot concentrations of BDF20 (20% biodiesel) and BDF50 (50% biodiesel) fuels are directly proportional to the engine load. On the other hand, if the engine is fueled with BDF20 and BDF50, the best environmentally effective operation condition is “low engine loads.” The maximum energy rate is found for BDF20 fuel. However, the minimum energy rate is determined for BDF20 fuel. It mostly depends on the lower heating value of the fuels. The heating values of the fuels from maximum to minimum are also BDF20>BDF50>BDF100. According to these results, it is determined that fuel energy is directly proportional to lower heating value. As a result of the assessment, this chapter can give ideas about the preferences of biofuels by making evaluations about the advantages of biofuels in terms of exhaust emissions, soot concentration, particle concentration, and fuel consumption.
