Özet

Hegemonic masculinity norms constitute a significant societal phenomenon that exacerbates gender inequality. Among the most influential domains contributing to the persistence of this phenomenon is sports journalism. Sports journalism, as a crucial societal institution with social, economic, cultural, and political dimensions, serves as a significant defender of hegemonic masculinity. Both sports journalism and sports media audiences hinder the entry of women into the realm of sports, considered as the fortress of hegemonic masculinity, and subject them to various forms of exploitation. While social media has increased the visibility of female sports journalists, it has also become a complex space where they are susceptible to online harassment. This chapter examines the entrenched hegemonic masculinity norms in sports journalism, the forms of online harassment faced by female sports journalists, coping strategies, and potential measures that can be taken in the fight against online harassment. In this regard, interviews were conducted with eight female sports journalists in Turkey to understand the dimensions of online harassment they face on social media. The chapter aims to explore the challenges faced by female sports journalists within the context of sports journalism, offering insights into the ways in which online platforms can be both empowering and perilous.
