Abstract

In the ceramic industry, which is challenging to compete in the global market day by day, low cost elements have become very important. Especially, the increase in the unit cost of energy, supplied with fossil fuels, is the biggest problem for the ceramic industry with a total cost of 33% energy. Because, the ceramic industry has many thermal processes, such as drying, heating, firing. Natural gas that is used in the heat production is responsible for the 71% of the energy cost. 43% of the total natural gas consumption is used in spray dryers, and 53% is consumed in the kilns. Therefore, it is necessary to perform energy and exergy analyses for each process that are using heat. In this study, the energy and exergy of a substance entering and leaving the spray dryer are found and also the energy loss, exergy loss and exergy destruction are calculated. Using this information, the ecological performance function (-509.49 kW) and ecologic coefficient of performance (0.734) are determined. It is seen that reducing exergy destruction in the system can positively affect the thermo-ecologic parameters of the spray dryer.
