Özet

This study covers school buildings affiliated with the Ministry of National Education located in the province of Kahramanmaraş, where the earthquakes of February 6, 2023 (Pazarcık Mw7.7 and Elbistan Mw7.6) occurred, and which had previously undergone reinforcement. Within the scope of the study, the extent to which the target school buildings that had undergone reinforcement measures were successful in withstanding the earthquakes, categorized as undamaged, slightly/moderately damaged, severely damaged, or collapsed, was determined through the reinforcement projects implemented and on-site field studies, thereby assessing the effectiveness of the reinforcement efforts. Post-earthquake inspections in the region revealed that buildings that had undergone reinforcement measures survived the earthquake without damage. Additionally, it was observed that the aforementioned school buildings were generally used as disaster and coordination centers immediately after the earthquake. The study found that some school buildings that had not been reinforced before the earthquake suffered serious damage and were severely damaged, while some were partially destroyed. In reinforced buildings, it was determined that the vast majority were undamaged or suffered minimal damage. In conclusion, it is clearly evident that the reinforced concrete wall reinforcement method for existing structures significantly prevents building damage in potential earthquakes.
