Özet
Natural stones are one of the oldest local building materials used by
humankind in construction due to their adaptability to the climate of their
areas, easy accessibility, durability, and economic advantages. Natural
stone reserves and massifs are found in many parts of Anatolia. Uşak,
where this study was conducted, is located within the Menderes Massif
region in Western Anatolia, where marble deposits are found. An
examination of rural settlements in the province, situated at a transition
point between geographical regions, revealed that traditional houses were
constructed using different building materials and techniques. This
difference is thought to stem from physical factors such as geography,
climate, and local materials, as well as sociological factors such as lifestyle
and socio-economic characteristics.
As a result of literature review and field work, the traditional houses built
with masonry in the villages of Cinoğlu, Eldeniz, and Hanoğlu in the
Sivaslı district, located southeast of Uşak, were selected as the subject of
this study. The area encompassing these three neighboring villages and
their surroundings contains marble, a different formation of the Menderes
Massif. This particular stone was used as a building material in the
construction of traditional houses. The aim of this study is to reveal and
contribute to the literature on the architectural features of masonry houses
in Cinoğlu, Eldeniz, and Hanoğlu villages in Sivaslı district of Uşak
province. Fieldwork was conducted in the villages at different times, and
the houses were examined in detail through photographic documentation,
on-site observation, and measurements. The traditional masonry houses
were evaluated in terms of building materials, plan schemes, and facade
elements.
